Practice your French pronunciations – Bar Margaux, a New York-inspired French brasserie, has just arrived on Lonsdale Street.
Owners Michael Madrusan and his wife Zara wanted a venue that reflects the Parisian-style brasseries from New York. So they collaborated with the interior designer of BAR studio, Deanie Madrusan, to bring Melbournians this dim-lit, 100-seat bar. It boasts checkered black and white tiled floors, red leather banquettes, an all zinc bar top and custom pendants and scones that draw inspiration from Café St. Regis in Paris.
Of course, their food menu also draws French inspiration. Daniel Southern, a French-trained group executive chef, helped Bar Margaux create a menu of French bistro classics. This includes duck frites, escargots de Bourgogne, moule Basquaise and the ‘MGX’ cheeseburger. They even have a supper menu that’s available until the early hours of the morning.
If you want to get even more French, have a look at their mouth-watering dessert menu that features the traditional tarte mousse au chocolat and the crème brûlée.
Oh, but the fun doesn’t end there. Bar Margaux has an extensive cocktail menu that is divided into three sections – light aperitif, serious styles and digestif. They have cocktails such as the Black Velvelt (Guiness and Champagne) and the Café Royal (coffee, Cognac and cream served hot). For $12 you can even get their ‘snack-sized’ (half-size) Martinis and Manhattans. They also have a champagne list and a wine program.
Keep an eye out for their daily specials throughout the week. Some of these specials include fondue for two, coq au vin and a beef bourguignon. If you’re going with four or more mates, there is also a ‘Beggars Banquet’ which includes French onion soup, steak frites, the ‘MGX’ burger and a croquet monsieur.
Michael and Zara also operates other successful venues like Heartbreaker, Connie’s Pizza and The Everleigh.
