Attention all lovers of camp, flamboyance and the eclectic! Let me introduce you to your soon-to-be new favourite venue; Evie’s Disco Diner.
This iconic Fitzroy venue opened its show stopping doors to the public on Valentine’s Day 2018 and has been serving all things camp ever since.
The venue is actually named after the owners ex-girlfriend (better than a tattoo I guess). The pair were actually exes at the time of the opening so the name was more of a jokey, ‘wouldn’t it be funny if-‘ idea. And let’s be honest, Wayne’s Disco Diner just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
This venue is definitely not what you would describe as a “hole in the wall”. In fact the entire exterior wall is painted an electric blue, so you’d have trouble missing it if you tried.
The front door doubles as a time machine, transporting you into a time before TikTok, Instagram and even Facebook (although it makes a great feature on these).
As you walk through the building, you are immersed in a 1980s New York City scene, with pink vinyl diner seats, and the walls adorned with neon signage. You will even find functioning arcade games scattered throughout the building. And who doesn’t love a disco ball?
Now I love the planet as much as you, however sucking on a soggy paper straw doesn’t exactly make me feel at the height of sophistication. Evie’s would never make you feel like this. They’ve got glass straws that keep plastic out of our oceans and don’t have you sucking on a bit of chewy cardboard (a win-win if you ask me).
If you like your alcoholic beverages to look and taste a bit like a milkshake, you’re in the right place. The Strawberries and Cream made me feel like a kid in a candy store, with a big dollop of whipped cream on top. YUM. We also tried a Pretty in Pink that lived up to the name, topped with a sour strap, this drink was the perfect collision of classy and camp.
And if you need something to soak up the alcohol (like we probably did) peruse their menu, however you might need a minute because there is so much to choose from.
We ended up getting a serving of the special loaded fries. Step to the side Maccas chippies because you’ve got NOTHING on Evie’s loaded fries. The chips were covered in cheese and jalapenos and honestly the perfect cure for the drunchies. (That’s the munchies for when you’ve had a few drinks for those who are unfamiliar).
If you’re keen for a feed, there are a whole lot of mains ready for you to devour. And, in a bid to cater for the vegan community, 50% of the menu is vegan friendly so go ahead and order that vegan fried chicken burger!
There are always events going on at Evie’s from their Bingo Wings Wednesdays, to Queeraoke Thursdays and Weekend Drag Brunches – no matter the day, you’re in for a show.
