Happy Birthday to the Queen, Thanks for the Day Off

One of the most debated days of the year has come around again where many are up in arms, questioning why it is exactly we have the day off to “celebrate” the “birthday” of a lady who “supposedly” governs our great nation from afar, on a date that isn’t actually her date of birth. But alas, rather than question or protest, let us embrace the day and wish the ole lass a most wonderful celebration whilst we make the most of the long weekend events Melbourne has going.

Campari House

Start your weekend at the Rooftop Bar at Campari House who have food and drink specials running all long weekend and live acoustic music playing into the night from Sunday afternoon. It’s also a great place to sample and take note of the Winter Cocktail list which, judging by Melbourne’s recent cold blitz, will start to come in very handy!

Pies v Demons Clash

Footy fans rejoice, a game on a Monday! Go watch the iconic clash between Collingwood and Melbourne at the G, or better yet, avoid the hordes of screaming footy fanatics at the game and watch the game at a multitude of Melbourne’s pubs and bars who are open and screening the game.

If you are heading to the game, you’ll want to get to the MCG by 2.30pm to witness the Big Freeze 2 take place, and see the biggest names in football take on the challenge of the big freeze to help find support the Cure MND Foundation.

‘Ave a pint or four

If you’re feeling a little guilty about completely forgetting the reason behind the national public holiday, Elephant and the Wheelbarrow is one of Melbourne’s iconic English pubs, so head down and pay homage to thy lady, and enjoy their extensive beer selection and classic English grub.

Scorsese at ACMI

After all, we are celebrating the Queen, why not honour another man that is globally recognised from his one name status; the legend of film, Scorcese. We are invited to take a glimpse inside the fascinating life of one of the most influential filmmakers in history, having films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and the The Wolf of Wall Street under his belt. The Scorcese exhibition allows visitors to take a peek into the work and career of this prominent creative. It is only on till September at ACMI in Federation Square, so don’t miss out and head down this weekend.

Winter in the City

Watch and marvel as Melbourne embraces this miserably bleak winter weather, turning a sombre time into a celebration with the 10th anniversary of The Light in Winter Festival.
Running till July 17th, Federation Square has an array of performances, artworks, live music and various exhibitions running from dusk all the way into the night. Delicious winter warming food and beverages are also available from an array of stalls, so do something a little bit different this long weekend and immerse yourself in a winter wonderland.
