Indulge at Melbourne’s Very Own Phuket Paradise

by Emily Corless

If you’re in the mood to be wined and dined with some of the best Asian fusion food and drink that Melbourne has to offer, you need to get yourself down to Longsong!

Tucked away on Little Bourke Street, far from the city’s hustle and bustle, this upstairs bar acts as an experimental love letter to South East Asia.

Located on the penthouse level of a converted 18th century horse stable, Longsong is architecturally stunning, and really makes the most of possessing such a unique space. Enter downstairs, via sister venue Longrain and ascend the staircase to uncover this funky bar.

Once inside you’ll be met with a moody interior of glossy wood and corrugated iron. The perfect combo of rustic and chic, offering a classy vibe without the stuffiness of a formal setting.

Intimate table settings line the window-strewn walls, so you can enjoy the atmosphere as you gaze over the city below.  Dimly-lit with flickering (in a vibey way, not a broken way) overhead lanterns and tabletop tea candles, which drench the venue in a cosy glow. The ambiance is flawless, ideal for a first date or dinner and drinks with your besties!

As far as the food goes, I hope you’re hungry! Longsong’s menu is jam-packed with enticing options that are sure to get your mouth watering.  A majority of the offerings are snack-centric, share-style plates, perfect to enjoy with your loved ones.

You can’t miss the buttery goodness of the Prawn Toast! A tasty concoction of brioche, sambal mayo and typhoon shelter crumb.

If you’re feeling adventurous, these dishes are perfect to get you out of your comfort zone and try something new! Usually you wouldn’t catch me anywhere near raw fish, but even I couldn’t get enough of the delicious Kingfish, a zesty dish, combining yuzu, fennel, pickled green chillies and salmon roe.

Or if you want to play it safe (so valid), the Grilled Half Chicken is an absolute must! Turmeric, fried shallots, burnt lemon and mint sauce, everything you could ever want in a chicken dinner.

In their own words, Longsong’s menu is a sensory experience.  A celebration of Thai flavours that provides an innovative twist on the South East Asian flavour profiles that we know and love!

Drink-wise, it’s cocktails galore, all masterfully theatrical and expertly crafted! So whether you’re the ‘sophisticated sipper, the social drinker or the cocktail aficionado’, Longsong will have something to suit every taste.

The star of the show has got to be the Clarified Thai Milk Tea, a milk-based cocktail like you’ve never had before! This tasty treat is a combination of spiced rum, Thai milk tea, coconut condensed milk, chocolate and lime.  The result of a happy accident involving Head Bartender Noah and some curdled coconut condensed milk, this drink is insanely good and a must-try for any chocolate lover!

Alternatively, try the Colourful Chameleon. Sit back and stir as the colour transforms from clear to purple! A delicious blend of Blanco tequila, Umeshu, agave, peach lemon juice, blue butterfly peach tea, and soda. Be careful though, these are so well-made that you’ll forget you’re drinking tequila (until you try and stand up)!

Despite the spectacular menu and the gorgeous décor, what really makes this venue is the incredible staff, who strive to provide sophisticated service without the formalities.

On-hand to offer suggestions, discuss the venue’s extensive history or just straight up vibe! We were lucky enough to be taken care of by star waiter Tom and master mixologist Noah, who really went above and beyond to ensure that our meal wasn’t just a meal, but an experience!

Speaking of experiences, no need to switch venues if you’re in the mood for some music! This bar offers an alternating line-up of some Melbourne’s best DJ’s. They’re getting the party started every Thursday-Saturday night, so dinner and drinks are sure to turn into an all-night affair at Longsong!
