In 1842 Amelia Shaw was the Retreat Hotels first female licensee. This venue's name is a nod to Amelia herself, and a cue to its regard for history and hospitality.

A side door inside the Retreat Hotel takes you upstairs to one of Brunswick's most beautiful and most secret spaces. It's a short ascent, but Amelia Shaw Bar and Salon is a world away from the beer-soaked atmosphere of the Retreat Hotel downstairs: American West Coast Deco with constructivist twists, Hand painted geometric murals, 1960's Japanese hotel lobby light fixtures and a mix of rare mid century furnishings all set an elegant tone.

The libations are similarly cued, classic cocktails drawn from a collection of high quality spirits, locally crafted brews, and quality, handpicked wines. Encouraging the use of Australian spirits, the cocktail list is as discerningly curated as the décor, with a sophisticated and shifting emphasis on era-specific drinks and classic techniques.

Opening hours are regular, and Fridays and Saturday nights are palpably buzzing.
