Our Top 5 Stalls At The Winter Night Market

Not entirely sure where to go on a cold winters night? Your choices include cuddling on the couch with a block of chocolate (or whichever type of sweets you seem to enjoy) or weathering Melbourne’s gloomy nights. Tough choice…but we have found just the place for you.

How could we write about night markets without mentioning the Queen Victoria Market and making it the star (and only star) of our article? Couldn’t resist! I could write about the history and where it’s specifically located and how to get there…but that’s not what you’re after. You want to know what to eat and where you can do it. Well, you’ve come to the right place. So basically, it’s time for that food baby to grow! (It’ll be well worth it, trust me)

Every Wednesday night from 5-10pm until the 30th of August, the Queen Victoria Market has 30 food stalls, 50 market stalls, a variety of entertainers, live music, design and specialty stores. Featuring a theme of fire and lights this year which is basically illuminating your path to grab more food. Yes, there are also raging open fires and lighting installations but our primary concern is the food.

One of the biggest rages on Instagram with posts getting thousands (maybe just hundreds or a couple dozen) of likes is hot, creamy melting cheese. The Fondue Corner serves melted cheese imported from France where it is simply poured on fresh baguettes, cornichons (pickled cucumber), charcuterie (meats? I think so anyway) and caramelised onions; served with French white wine. It is believed to be one of the most popular dishes in France and Switzerland. Cultural lesson over!

Paco’s Tacos are cooking up Mexico’s favourite national street foods…tacos and fresh grilled corn! Yum! Your choices include beef, chicken or black beans that are all accompanied with lettuce, salsa and fresh cheese. Don’t forget the char grilled corn…with an optional layer of grated cheese all over. Sounds a little cheesy…

If you’re craving some Southern delights, then New Orleans Gumbo Kitchen is just the food stall for you. With a variety on the menu, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Highlights include Mac’n’Cheese Croquettes (vegetarian option), Southern Fried Buttermilk Chicken or Seafood Gumbo.

The Waffle Club is serving some serious waffles from four different places around the globe, without ever leaving the city. Using only the finest ingredients including homemade gelato and premium dark chocolate, you’ll even forget to count the calories…just don’t tell your PT!
