Cindy Sherman may not be a household name here in Australia, but once you learn about this renowned New York photographer’s history and motivations, you will soon become fascinated and enthralled by her work.
QAGOMA is the only Australian venue to be hosting the exhibition of the woman who has been labelled a master of masquerade, using her own image to carry out decades of character studies. The exhibition, which is only around till October 3rd, focuses on Sherman’s exploration of contemporary society’s fascination with aspiration, narcissism, the cult of celebrity and emotional fragility. Sherman herself is the character in each image, acting as the portrait to represent a myriad of women. The exhibition includes two series made with high fashion houses Balenciaga and Chanel, and an entirely new body of work shown for the first time outside New York.
Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity and be moved by Sherman’s profound ability to communicate through a lens – you may just learn a few things about yourself.
