FUNCTION VENUES NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Barney Allen’s is a St Kilda institution situated in the area of some of the best bars in Melbourne, right in the heart of the edgy Fitzroy Street and is frequented by locals and visitors alike. It has deep rich warm red walls, a huge timber bar right in the centre, plenty of smaller dining tables, as well as a few different spaces ideal for larger groups. One of the best spots (in the whole street) is the outside area which, although within the boundary of the venue, sits looking directly over all the fun and action of this famous street. As it is an outside area this is also the smoking area. The owners, Iain Hewitson, Ruth Allen and her brother, Barney Allen, have been operating in the street for 25 years so they know the industry, the street and the suburb. Television chef, Iain Hewitson, has designed the menu so that it is approachable and reasonably priced. There are plenty of smaller dishes to nibble on or share as well as some heartier main course dishes. The place has a cult following for its burger which has featured on many best burger lists over the years. The layout of the place means that it suits many types of occasions whether it be a quiet drink alone at the bar or a drinks with friends that turn into dinner if you fancy. There are soft black velvet couches in the back corner for a more laidback evening too. It is not uncommon to meet at the bar for a drink and nibble, move to the dining tables for something more substantial and then adjourn to the couches to enjoy cocktails to finish off the evening. The wine list is small but offers plenty of wines by the glass to suit a variety of tastes. There are plenty of craft and imported beers and the cocktail list is fun and delicious. With St Kilda being known for its live music and rock ‘n roll origins the music played is often reflective of that and quite often some of those musicians will be enjoying a drink at the bar too. When the place starts to buzz the music steps up to become more upbeat to keep with the vibe. On the first Tuesday of the month there is trivia which is free to enter and guarantees and great night out, every Sunday afternoon there is laid back live music from 4-6pm and a ridiculously good curry is on offer on Sundays too (only $15). Barney Allen’s is the type of place that welcomes people from all walks of life and the friendliness can mean that anyone will end up talking to someone else if that’s what they are after.
